A total of 30 Maoists surrendered before security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district on Tuesday. Among them, nine were carrying a bounty of Rs. 39,00,000 on their heads.

The Maoists, among them six women, turned themselves in before senior officials of the Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), citing that they were disappointed with atrocities performed by Maoists on local tribals and “hollow” Maoist ideology.

Out of the 30 who surrendered, Mitki Kakem alias Sarita, a member of military company no. 2 of Maoists, and Muri Muhnda alias Sukhmati, a member of platoon no. 32, were carrying bounties of Rs. 8,00,000 each on their heads.

Rajita Vetti, Deve Kovasi, and Ayta Sodhi, all platoon members, and Sinu, a member of battalion no. 1 of Maoists, carried a reward of Rs. 5,00,000 each on their heads.

The others, Munna Hemla, Aytu Midiam, and Aytu Karam, were active as heads of Janatana Sarkar (People's Government) groups of Maoists, and they carried rewards of Rs. 1,00,000 each on their heads.

As per the reports, 180 Maoists have been arrested, and 76 Maoists have so far surrendered in the district this year. The district also accounts for more than half of the 104 Maoists shot down in encounters in Bastar this year.

The surrendered Maoists were provided Rs. 25,000 each and will be rehabilitated as per the government's policy. No doubt the rehabilitation policy for these Maoists is also one of the reasons why they are surrendering in high numbers.

The Maoists are now terrorised by the state’s ongoing anti-Naxal operations in various regions, where many high-ranking Maoists are being shot down or arrested with other Maoists, which is making them go on backfoot and eventually surrender to the police.

The continuous efforts made by the security forces and the government are putting the Maoists on their knees while many are getting shot down and many are being arrested. At this pace, it is evident that a total wipeout of left-wing extremism is not so far from happening in the near future.
