The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has registered one more case to expedite its sustained drive in preventive action against activities by Naxals, and filed a chargesheet against the fifth accused in the Naxal Magadh Zone revival case hailing from Aurangabad district, Bihar. The NIA had charged the accused, identified as Anil Yadav alias Chhota Sandeep alias Mantu, under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

The supplementary chargesheet was submitted before a special court in Patna on Monday. The development came on the heels of the earlier chargesheets of four other accused in the same case, registered on September 26 last year. The case pertains to attempts made by the proscribed Naxal outfit to regain ground and revive its operations in Bihar's Magadh zone.

As per NIA investigations, Chhota Sandeep is also an active member of the banned organisation and is deeply engaged in projecting the organisation's ideology of violence, with the motive to instigate people to join its ranks and file.

The central agency further revealed that Sandeep, along with other accused persons, including Rohit Rai, Pramod Yadav, Pramod Mishra, and Anil Yadav, alias Ankush, was also involved in raising funds through the collection of levies from the local brick kiln owners and contractors.

The statement revealed that not only was the criminal activity dedicated to the Naxals, but Sandeep possessed criminal records with four cases against him, which were registered in various police stations in Aurangabad and Gaya districts. All this evidence of records made sure that the presenting behaviour was ongoing and conspiratorial and confirmed the charges levelled against him by the NIA.
“The investigation has further revealed that the collection of the levies from business establishments, contractors, and toll plazas, among others, was planned in one clandestine meeting proposed to be held at Mahi village, Aurangabad, on June 8 by Sandeep and his associates. The revelation of NIA findings shows a deep-rooted conspiracy that can substantially impair the sovereignty and integrity of India.”

The latest action by the NIA further highlights its relentless pursuit of this case towards justice and an end to the Naxal network. The chargesheets filed by the agency pertain to a larger strategy of the NIA to nip in the bud the possible resurgence of swaying naxalism in Bihar and elsewhere.

The efforts of the NIA, joined by support from the local law enforcement agencies, turn out to be of significant help in fighting militias like the Naxals. More details are likely to come to light with the advancement of the investigation, explaining how deep the conspiracy was and the roles of the accused individuals.

The special court in Patna is now going to take up the supplementary chargesheet filed by the government, paving the way for effective legal proceedings. This case will only remind us of some of the challenges that remain in combating naxalism and, therefore, the need for vigilant and coordinated activity by all the stakeholders.
