In a recent parliamentary session debating the Union Budget 2024, Rahul Gandhi of the Congress Party has been in the news for his optimum use of the 'chakravyuha' analogy from the great epic Mahabharata against the BJP-led NDA government. Not only was such a comparison misconceived on the part of Gandhi, but it is also an insult to the great epic itself and its profound teachings. This use of the Mahabharata for political gains is deeply troubling and disrespectful.
The Chakravyuh Analogy: the Misguided and its Misuse
Much of Gandhi's speech was centred around the chakravyuha, a military formation from the Mahabharata, equating it with India's present under the NDA government. He called the chakravyuha 'lotus formation,' drawing a far-fetched link with the BJP's symbol.
He said Abhimanyu was entrapped and killed in Chakravyuha, similarly, today India is entrapped in a new Chakravyuha by PM Modi and his associates like Amit Shah, Mohan Bhagwat, Ajit Doval, and Business Tycoons Ambani and Adani.
“This is only far-fetched and reveals an ignorance of the deeper messages of the Mahabharata; the chakravyuha therein was purely a strategic military concept for formation, not symbolic of political entrapment. By twisting this, Gandhi has unjustifiably undermined that epic's historical and cultural significance.”
A Political Gimmick Lacking Substance
Rahul Gandhi's speech was rhetoric, without any worthwhile critique. His claim that the NDA government has created an 'atmosphere of fear' is not backed by concrete evidence. This govt isn't leaving any stone unturned in working tirelessly towards enhancing national security, boosting economy and uplifting marginalised sections under able leadership of PM Modi.
In clear contrast to the allegations of Gandhi, Budget 2024 is much acclaimed for its provisions on job creation and infrastructure development, with due importance to social welfare. BJP MP Suresh Gopi rightly said that the budget needs to be analysed in view of the welfare of people, not by way of political opportunism.
The Irony of Rahul Gandhi's Allegations
Then there is the remark of Gandhi that only one person in the BJP can dream of becoming a PM. This rings rather hollow, given the history of his own party being in dynastic democracy. On the contrary, BJP has an impeccable record in internal democracy whereby leaders come up on merit and through hard work. Indeed, it underscores this very fact that the recent Union Budget reflects an all-inclusive approach with big allocations for various sectors aimed at holistic growth.
Furthermore, his insinuation that NDA leaders, including the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, are mortally afraid of PM Modi, is unfounded. The very fact that an NDA government functions on principles of collective leadership and decision-making implies that diverse voices are heard and taken account of.
Countering the Fear Mongering
Gandhi's rhetoric that the NDA government is instilling fear in farmers, workers, and youngsters is a diadem example of fear-mongering. It is actually the policies of this government that were aimed at empowering these very classes of people. For instance, the abrogation of Article 370 has brought considerable improvement in law and order in Jammu and Kashmir—a fact that speaks to the commitment of this present government toward national security and stability.
Now, the government's efforts at bringing in legal guarantees on Minimum Support Price and other such policies for the benefit of farmers show its commitment towards the welfare of the agricultural fraternity. The accusations by Gandhi about 'fear' and 'oppression' are simple diversionary tactics from these good points.
Conclusion: Call to Responsible Political Discourse
Equating Rahul Gandhi's use of the Mahabharata for political mileage has been a disservice to its legacy and an affront to Indian cultural values. There are lessons regarding duty, righteousness, and the confusing maze of human nature encapsulated within this great epic and guiding our leaders in action and word. It is pitiful that such a revered text is dragged into the murky waters of politics.
It is an insult that we must strongly denounce and a misguided attempt at manipulating symbols of culture to gain political mileage. Now is the time for our political discourse to rise above sensationalism and get on with meaningful debates that address the real problems of our nation.
In short, Rahul Gandhi's theatrical speech in the Lok Sabha had no substance. The NDA government under PM Modi remains committed to the path of progress and development, undeterred by baseless accusations and fear-mongering tactics. Let us justify in the true spirit of Mahabharata by seeking truth, justice, and the bigger good for our nation.
