In a major development related to anti-Naxalite operations, two notorious Maoists surrendered before the Kabirdham police. These surrenders come as part of the focussed rehabilitation and anti-Naxalite strategies evolved by the State to persuade Maoist terrorists to shun violence and integrate with mainstream society.
The latter two surrendered Maoists have been identified as Dinesh alias Lakshman Madkam, 30, and Bhima alias Ashok alias Anil, 38. They were active members of the Kanha-Bhoramdeo area committee. While Dinesh carried a bounty of ₹15 lakh on his head, Bhima had a reward of ₹10 lakh.
Under the rehabilitation policy of Chhattisgarh, both of them received immediate help of INR 25,000 each and have been eligible for further assistance by the government. It was of immense help in toning down the Maoist activities, as it gave those willing to surrender a peaceful way out of Maoist terrorism.
“This development comes days after the surrender of a woman Maoist, Ranita alias Hidme Kowasi. Ranita, a member of MMC zonal committee and active since 2016, had a bounty of INR 13 lakh on her head. The authorities are optimistic that she will inspire more Maoists, including her husband Prem, to shun violence like her.”
The surrender ceremony was done at the Traffic Plaza in Kawardha and was attended by senior police officials, including SP Dr. Abhishek Pallava, ASP Vikas Kumar, and DSP Naxal Ops Sanjay Dhruv. Pallava has stated that the State is very serious about the rehabilitation of surrendered Maoists and has urged other terrorists to come into the mainstream line of peace processes and government rehabilitation schemes.
These recent surrenders have been termed a success of the double-edged state policy of stringent action against active Maoists and liberal rehabilitation for those who surrender. Stringent initiative taken by the government has resulted in a number of terrorists who have laid down their arms, thereby improving security and peace in the region.
