The early morning of August 9, 2024, witnessed repugnant news flow through the cobbled streets of Kolkata: a post-graduate trainee doctor working at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital had been brutally raped and killed.

As per the police, she was found lying in a semi-nude state at one of the seminar halls, where she struggled for life with grave injuries inflicted upon her.

This brutal act not only surprised the city but also triggered a nationwide protest and has even raised questions as to whether women would be safe in West Bengal.

Details of the Incident

The victim was a talented doctor who had last been seen alive on the night of August 8. CCTV footage showed Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer and a broker at the hospital at the spot, which had led to his arrest.

It was proved beyond an iota of doubt that Roy, who at the time was under alcoholic intoxication and had taken liquor with a relative of a patient, went inside the seminar hall where the victim was resting. After around 45 minutes, he stepped out of the hall having done this disgusting thing. Later, he was arrested and charged with rape and murder.

Her family and colleagues had their worst fears confirmed in the autopsy report, which described severe injuries caused by an "extreme level of brutality." More than that being something atrocious, the family wasn't allowed to see her nor even her body afterward, and besides this, anyone could get concerned at how things have been going in the case.

Mamta’s Government Failure and Inaction

The incident has also exposed the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, headed by Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal, of all the assurances it provided to provide safety and security for women. Many have lambasted the government response, saying it was too little and done too late, and some have accused that officials initially sought to minimise its significance for less salient public panic.

Security Lapse: The hospital where the crime took place, a state-run hospital, had allegedly been facing security issues for months. The hospital administration did not take steps to ensure safety despite several warnings and earlier incidents of violence on the premises. One of the victims fell through this crack that is used by many others.

Political Interference: People have alleged that the TMC government was trying to shield her party cadre in its investigation under political pressure. It has been alleged that the hospital management initially tried to pass off what happened in there as a suicide, and some evidence had also been manipulated.
“A video emerged of a group entering the girl's hostel at RG Kar Hospital during the night hours post-incident—an alarming visual! TMC goons allegedly carried out the midnight attack on hospital premises and vandalisation of property to destroy crucial evidence present at the crime scene! Meanwhile, there were reports of even doctors being attacked while protesting peacefully.”

Delayed Justice: The way Kolkata Police has been handling the case has invited heavy criticism. The investigation has since played out slowly and got allegations of corruption and incompetence. Public pressure and intervention of the Calcutta High Court ruling was the only good, which got CBI to step in later.

The transfer was described as necessary to ensure an impartial and complete investigation that would be free from local political influence. Meanwhile, Mamta's conspicuous silence on this matter had only endeared more anger and disbelief from the public.

Public Outcry and Protests

The doctor fraternity, medical staff, and people in general have come together seeking justice on the incident. The region is seething with protests; medical professionals have gone on strikes, and the country has agitated. In the meantime, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) even appealed for a nationwide strike seeking protection for doctors while working in an unsafe environment.

Bollywood and non-Bollywood celebrities alike have come forward, calling for justice to be delivered immediately as well as slamming the government's inefficiency in being able to protect its citizens. The “Reclaim the Night” protests attracted large attendance but were also marred by violence amidst claims of provocation.

A Call for Accountability

This unfortunate incident is simply a big signal of bad governance in West Bengal under Mamata Banerjee. The fact that the TMC government is even unable to assure the basic security of its citizens, above all women, is a grim failure.

The administration's controversial efforts to shape the narrative and stymie justice only contribute further to a built-up of dissatisfaction among people.

The central government has to act decisively and immediately on these accounts. The women's safety should not be compromised; criminals and those who are involved directly or indirectly in such heinous acts are accountable for these irresponsible actions!

The people of West Bengal deserve better—they deserve a government that will keep them safe and enforce the rule of law.

Finally, the nation goes into mourning for a dedicated doctor, and it is also an opportunity to consider how urgently systemic reforms are required.

It is the responsibility of the government to take strict action against such incidents and also do something necessary so that these sorts of incidents are not repeated. Real justice can only be delivered through accountability and transparent governance.
