In a major success for Chhattisgarh's ongoing counter-insurgency operations, four Maoists, including two women cadres, surrendered to the police and Border Security Force (BSF) in Kanker district, Bastar division, on Thursday. The surrendered militants were carrying a cumulative reward of ₹12 lakh on their heads.

The cadre expressed their disillusionment with the Maoist ideology, terming it hollow and unconvincing. According to the police, they cited atrocities within the Maoist ranks as a significant reason for their surrender.

Additionally, the state's rehabilitation policy, which offers financial assistance and vocational training for surrendered cadres, played a vital role in encouraging their defection from the insurgency.

Among the surrendering Maoists was Sitaay Korram alias Surjanna, a prominent commander of the Kuemari Local Organisation Squad (LOS) in the North Bastar division.

Surjanna, who joined the Maoist ranks in 2007, had a bounty of ₹5 lakh on her head. She was involved in several deadly attacks, including the 2010 Narayanpur ambush, which claimed the lives of 27 security personnel, and a 2013 assault on a police patrol in Kanker, resulting in the death of a police officer.

Another key cadre, Lukku Punem alias Naresh, was the Kuemari area committee member with a reward of ₹5 lakh. Naresh had been involved in numerous Maoist activities over the past decade.

The other two cadres, Sarita Sori alias Anju and Ganga Dirdo alias Sagar, were members of the Kuemari LOS and carried ₹1 lakh rewards each.

This surrender highlights the effectiveness of the security forces' operations and the Chhattisgarh government's rehabilitation policies aimed at encouraging Maoists to return to the mainstream.

The state's police force and central paramilitary units like the BSF have been relentless in their efforts to counter Maoist terrorism in the region.

Local officials have lauded the security forces for their dedication and strategic approach, which has significantly weakened Maoist influence in Bastar.

The government’s multi-faceted approach—combining military operations, community development, and rehabilitation—has yielded positive results, bringing many disillusioned cadres back to normal life.

This recent surrender is yet another testament to the success of the state’s comprehensive anti-Maoist efforts, a step towards lasting peace in the region.
