In a decisive blow to the Maoist terrorism in Chhattisgarh, 9 Maoists were killed in a fierce encounter with security forces, and 13 Maoists were arrested on September 3, 2024.
The encounter took place near the inter-district border of Dantewada and Bijapur, a region notorious for Maoist activities. Acting on credible intelligence about the presence of Maoist terrorists from the West Bastar Division, a joint team comprising the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched an anti-Naxal operation.
The operation began at around 10:30 AM when the security forces encountered the Maoists in the dense forests near Lohagaon-Pidiya. A heavy exchange of fire ensued, resulting in the deaths of nine Maoists, all clad in uniforms of the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA).
The security forces recovered a significant cache of weapons from the encounter site, including Self Loading Rifles (SLRs), .303 rifles, and .315 bore rifles, along with other Naxal-related materials.
Remarkably, all the security personnel involved in the operation remained unscathed. The success of this mission is a testament to the strategic planning and execution by the state’s counter-terrorism forces, who have been intensifying their operations against Maoist elements in the region.
Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma lauded the bravery and effectiveness of the security forces, stating, "The strength of our jawans is establishing peace in Bastar, and soon, Naxalism will be eradicated from Chhattisgarh." His remarks underscore the government's resolve to eliminate Naxalism, which has plagued the region for decades.
This encounter marks a significant achievement in the ongoing battle against Naxalism in Chhattisgarh. With the total count of Maoists killed in similar operations this year now exceeding 190, it is evident that the state’s efforts to curb the Maoist menace are yielding results.
The operation is still ongoing, with security forces continuing their search in the surrounding areas to ensure the complete neutralisation of any remaining threats.
