MHOW [Madhya Pradesh]: In the late night, people everywhere in the country were celebrating India's Champions Trophy win against New Zealand. As part of the celebration, people living in Madhya Pradesh's Mhow were also outside to celebrate the same. But, unfortunately, this celebration turned chaotic after a few minutes.

The incident reportedly began around 11:00 PM on March 9, 2025, near the Jama Masjid area, where a procession of jubilant cricket fans was passing through, waving flags and chanting slogans to celebrate India’s triumph in the high-stakes final.

According to eyewitnesses, the situation escalated when an argument broke out between the celebrating group and local Muslim residents. Stones allegedly thrown at the procession escalated tensions, prompting retaliation from both sides.

Within minutes, the confrontation spiralled out of control. Reports indicate that the violence intensified with the use of petrol bombs, resulting in at least two vehicles being torched and several shops set ablaze. Videos circulating on social media showed flames lighting up the night sky as panicked residents fled the scene.

“It started as a celebration, but suddenly there were stones flying everywhere. Then someone threw a petrol bomb, and it became a riot,” said Ravi Sharma, a local shopkeeper who witnessed the events.

Police were quick to respond, deploying a heavy contingent to the area to restore order. Tear gas and lathi charges were used to disperse the clashing groups, with authorities managing to bring the situation under control by around 1:00 AM.

“We acted swiftly to prevent further escalation. Several individuals have been detained, and we are investigating the cause of the clash,” said Superintendent of Police (SP) Indore Rural, Manoj Singh.
“Preliminary reports suggest that the violence may have stemmed from the local muslim community, though officials have urged caution against jumping to conclusions until a full investigation is complete.”

At least five people were injured in the melee, with two requiring hospitalisation for burn injuries. Property damage is estimated to be significant, with burnt-out vehicles and shattered shopfronts lining the streets near Jama Masjid this morning.

The unrest has drawn sharp reactions from local leaders and residents. “This is a shameful act. A moment of national pride should unite us, not divide us,” said Priya Malhotra, a community leader in Mhow.

Others expressed frustration on social media, with posts on X noting the irony of a sports victory leading to such destruction. One user wrote, “These Muslims turned a Champions Trophy celebration into a battlefield. Sad day for our town.”

As of this morning, March 10, 2025, the area remains under heavy police surveillance, with additional forces stationed to prevent any further flare-ups.

Authorities have appealed for calm and are reviewing CCTV footage to identify those responsible for instigating the violence. And it is speculated that the Muslims only started this violence.

The investigation is ongoing, and a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including rioting and arson.

India’s Champions Trophy win, a historic moment for the nation, has been overshadowed by this incident, casting a sombre note over what should have been a night of unity and celebration in Mhow.
